City of Melfort asking for feedback with their public library community survey

The City of Melfort is asking for the public’s assistance to help them determine the future of the public library.

Back on Aug. 15, city council released a community survey, which asked residents a variety of detailed questions about the potential plans to upgrade or relocate the current space.

Municipal project manager, Kalyna Livingstone, told northeastNOW the library is very important to the community and therefore she believes the community deserves a big say.

“This survey is part of a larger feasibility study where we’re going to gather feedback from the community. We’ll take all of that feedback and develop a plan to continue to figure out the best way to offer services through the library, and what the future of the library will look like, so we can plan accordingly.”

The survey is meant to encourage what people like and think could be improved when using the space.

It also offers those who don’t use it often, or at all, to see what might make them visit on a regular basis.

Livingstone added how the library serves as a landmark in the city and needs to remain open because of that.

“The library is a hub for our city and we want it to remain open and welcoming and accessible, and expand on the success of the current library. The best way, we figured to know what those goals should be, are the people who use the library or even walk by it every day and have it available.”

While this survey offers the option to pose new ideas, Livingstone explained they wanted to remain realistic when creating the questions and answers.

“By gathering this feedback and making sure that there is a general direction that we can move towards, that’s when we’d go into the more detailed design. That’s how we would know how much it’s going to cost and that sort of thing. Those are the major factors, I think will impact the final recommendations of this study.”

The survey will run until Sept. 16, with Group 2 Architecture scheduled to do a presentation to Melfort city council on Sept. 12.

The final report, feasibility study and cost estimate, along with the results of this survey will then come out in October and be discussed for council approval in October.
