Laboucane wins Day 2 at the CPCA Finals

Jamie Laboucane is well on his way to finishing as the points leader in the Canadian Professional Chuckwagon Association (CPCA) this year.

The veteran driver from St. Walburg, who’s been atop the leaderboard for most of the summer, took home Day Money at the CPCA Finals on Thursday in Lloydminster. His time of 1:13:20 beat out Preston Faithful and Todd Baptiste, two drivers who also competed in the eighth and final heat of the night.

Laboucane’s non-points wagon finished seventh. This would mark his first high points win and another shot at the CPCA title. Laboucane has won back-to-back aggregate titles at the North American Chuckwagon Championship and has qualified for the Dash at the CPCA Finals several times, but he’s never been able to win that final race.

He’s now sitting second in the show aggregate standings, behind Wednesday’s winner Faithful and just ahead of Baptiste, Devin Mitsuing and Meadow Lake’s Logan Gorst. The defending CPCA champ, who trails Laboucane by 30 points in the overall standings, was eighth on Thursday and leads Faithful by 40.5 points in the season standings, but is fifth in the show aggregate.

Barring a major collapse by either of the top two drivers, they should qualify for Sunday’s final dash that will decide the season championship and who takes home a brand new truck. Baptiste, the 2019 CPCA champ and a frequent contender on Sunday, is 34.5 points back of Faithful, but only 10.5 points ahead of Luke Tournier. Danny Ringuette, who was amongst the leaderboard most of the season, is in sixth, but has fallen behind by nearly 100 points.

Races continue tonight and tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. at the Lloyd Ex with warm conditions expected the rest of the weekend. Other details on festivities at the CPCA Finals are available online.
