Gorst tops Day 4 at CPCA Finals, Laboucane wins aggregate, dash set

Aug 20, 2022 | 11:25 PM

The defending champ from Meadow Lake had the fastest time of Day 4 at the CPCA Finals in Lloydminster, setting the stage for an exciting last race.

Logan Gorst topped Preston Faithful by three tenths of a second at 1:14.27 to take home day money at the Lloyd Ex, securing his second place seeding for Sunday afternoon’s final dash. He finishes fourth in the show aggregate standings and only behind St. Walburg’s Jamie Laboucane in the season standings.

The final heat on Saturday. All four drivers will face off again in Sunday’s dash.

Laboucane continued his strong racing in the Border City, winning the show aggregate as well with a combined time of 4:58.18. Faithful finished second in the show aggregate, while 2019 champion Todd Baptiste was third.

Final four set

The remaining four drivers were the only CPCA members to clear 1100 points during the season and represent an intriguing field for Sunday’s dash.

Laboucane enters as the favourite, having lead Gorst for most of the season, while winning several show titles, including the second straight aggregate victory at the North American Chuckwagon Championship in July. If he wins, this would be Laboucane’s first CPCA title, having come close with three appearances in the dash

However, Gorst enters Sunday’s race with some momentum after Saturday’s win. He’s also in a similar situation to last year, where he won the dash after Todd Baptiste came into that race as the high point champion.

Hailing from Red Pheasant, Baptiste is also a dangerous contender for victory, having won once already 2019 and finding his form in the second half of the CPCA season this year after a (moderately) slow start. This will mark his fourth straight appearance Sunday’s dash, with two high point wins in previous seasons.

Faithful is the lone newcomer to the championship race, as his previous best finish was ninth in 2021. However, there’s already recent precedent for an upset, given rookie Dale Mitsuing’s win back in 2018, and Faithful has already shown he’s capable of beating the best this year, with a win in Wainwright and multiple top three finishes.

The action begins at 2:00 p.m. at Halstead Downs, with the awards presentation set to follow.
