Giving those with dyslexia a chance to love reading

A library in the northeast wants to make sure everyone has an opportunity to enjoy the magic of a good book.

For those with dyslexia, being passionate about books can be difficult. However, the Melfort Public Library wants to ensure that everyone has a chance to develop a love for reading.

With the help of special dyslexic-friendly books, readers can enjoy titles from various genres.

The project is thanks to a partnership between the Wapiti regional libraries, the provincial library and the literacy office.

Rene Chambers, the head librarian at the Melfort branch told northeastNOW they are proud to be part of the pilot project.

“They include a variety of materials, including high low items, which are books that have an interest level suitable for older individuals, but with a lower vocabulary for young adult and junior readers.”

Dyslexic-friendly books include features such as being printed on off-white paper, heavier weighted paper, fewer words per page and dyslexic-friendly fonts.

Chambers said that although the program is new, it has already attracted some readers’ attention.

“We’ve had people come in since we advertised to check them out. We’re still waiting for a bit of feedback because it is new. But we’re certainly excited to have this option available.”

The books began arriving at the beginning of August and the second set of books for young readers just arrived.

The library has been learning about ways to combat those who have reading impairments such as using different colour lenses in front of the pages.

For those wanting to check out the updated library additions, Chambers welcomes everyone to come in and explore the books.

“The items will all be catalogued in a new format, dyslexia friendly, and it will be available for holds. It’s a great resource for individuals and families within our region.”

The library currently has a variety of fiction books for young adult and junior readers to enjoy.
