Mintos and Wildcats tie in back-and-forth contest

Sep 10, 2022 | 10:24 PM

Owen Dyck and Carson Olsen each had two points on Saturday night as the Prince Albert Mintos tied the Warman Wildcats 3-3 at the Art Hauser Centre.

The physical back and forth bout saw Mintos lead the game a total of three separate times, only to have the Wildcats climb back to tie just minutes later.

Prince Albert’s Kelan Simmonds, Owen Nelson and Owen Dyck each lit the lamp while Dyck also had an assist to add to his point tally. Carson Olsen led the team in assists with two while Nolan Patterson and Sam Grosso each had helpers of their own.

For Warman, Ty Dauvin, Deegan Wapass, and Tylan Henrikson each found the back of the net. Zane Normand and Kaden Johns both had two assists while Tommy Ries added one.

Brady Holtvogt stood between the pipes for the Mintos, stopping 29 of 32 shots as PA now sits with a 0-1-1-0 preseason record.

Warman netminder Corben Schnurr made 24 saves on 27 shots as the Wildcats also have 0-1-1-0 record in the preseason.

COMPLETE BOX SCORE

It didn’t take long for the games first goal as the Mintos struck twine early in the game while on the power play. Dyck’s pass found Simmonds in the slot who tucked it home to put PA on top.

Just minutes later, the Wildcats erased PA’s lead thanks to Dauvin’s effort in front, cleaning up the loose puck to tie it. The score remained tied after the opening twenty.

The Mintos scored the only goal in the second period thanks to a nifty deflection in front by Nelson to help PA restore their lead.

Their lead would last only two minutes into the third when Warman’s Wapass cleaned up a rebound in front to tie it again. The tie would be broken with less than ten minutes to go as Dyck would net his second point of the game to make it 3-2 PA.

The Wildcats pulled the goalie with 1:03 to go and they converted with the extra attacker to send the game to overtime.

Overtime solved nothing and oddly, neither did the shootout. None of the Wildcats nor Mintos shooters could find a way to score and after the third shooter of each team went, the officials called the game which ended in a 3-3 tie.

The Mintos are back in action on Tuesday night when the Saskatoon Contacts visit the Art Hauser Centre.
