Mintos sweep weekend series vs Legionnaires

Sep 25, 2022 | 4:29 PM

PRINCE ALBERT, SK- The Prince Albert Mintos came out on top on Sunday afternoon, downing the Swift Current Legionnaires 4-3 to sweep the weekend series at the Art Hauser Centre.

A 2-0 first period lead quickly fell apart in the second after three Swift Current goals, but PA kept their cool and managed to net the game winner late in the game.

Caden Dunn, Logan Pickford, Konnor Watson, and Van Taylor each found the back of the net for the Mintos in the contest, while Watson, Carter Cole, and Carson Olsen each collected assists.

For the Legionnaires, it was Eric Hoiness, Brendan Quinn-Lagria, and Wesley Olson who scored for Swift, while Kade Stringer, Rylan Williams, and Keelan Mansuy each collected helpers.

Prince Albert netminder Jayden Kraus stopped 23 of 26 shots to help the Mintos improve to 2-0-0-0 on the campaign.

Swift Current goalie Jacob Morris made 12 saves in the loss, as the Legionnaires fall to 0-2-0-0 this season.

COMPLETE BOX SCORE

It was all PA in the first period as the Mintos jumped out to an early lead.

Dunn got things started midway through the frame thanks to a pass from Cole to pot his first of the year. Five minutes later and Pickford found the back of the net to make it 2-0 Prince Albert after one.

The second period was a bit of a different story. Swift Current scored just 90 seconds in courtesy of Hoiness to cut the lead to one.

The Mintos would restore their lead after an amazing feat of hand eye coordination. The puck was hit up into the air by a Legionnaires defender but Watson was there to bat home the puck in mid-air.

Shortly after, the floodgates opened for the Legionnaires and the goals started coming. Swift Current managed to score two goals in 20 seconds on the Mintos thanks to efforts from Quinn-Lagria and Olson to tie the game at three a piece.

PA regained the lead late in the game while on the man advantage. Watson set up Taylor for the one-timer behind the net who blasted it home.

In a last-ditch effort, the Legionnaires pulled their goalie for the extra attacker in hopes of scoring but that plan did not work as the Prince Albert Mintos defeated Swift Current 4-3.

Next up for PA is a long two weeks before a road game in Moose Jaw as they’ll battle it out versus the Windmar Warriors on Saturday, October 8.
