Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of Humboldt recently held its 2022 Big Celebration, recognizing its volunteers, mentors and sponsors.

Development Coordinator Jodie Hergott told northeastNOW it was a nice feeling to have the ceremony in person, for the first time in a couple of years.

“It was so great to actually gather and be able to shake hands and look into people’s eyes again.”

The organization also handed out its yearly awards, which included Volunteer of the Year, Mentor of the Year and Youth of the Year.

Hergott said it’s always an emotional time when people receive their recognition.

“All of our winners were very grateful and they had some wonderful words to share with everybody and I’m not gonna lie, there were a few tears in the room. We’re just very grateful, our community is amazing and our kids have hope.”

A total of four awards were handed out on the night, as Hergott spoke about each individual recipient.

Volunteer of the Year-Jenn Hansen: Jen’s been volunteering with our agency for about five years and she makes a really strong effort to participate in our event committee meetings, she sells tickets for us and moves her calendar around when we have an event and we need workers, she’s more than willing.

Tyler Bieber Mentor of the Year-Brent Hergott: Brent’s been a mentor for about four years now and he and his little just have a really, really great connection that was a great match. They’re always doing something along the lines of quadding or fixing carburetors on engines and of course, there are always card games involved.

Champion Award-Humboldt Co-Op Association: The Humboldt Co-op has been a longtime supporter of our agency and we can always count on them to champion for us. When we have a major event coming up, they usually provide sponsorship and they’re always willing to do what they can to support every one of our fundraisers.

Brody Hinz Youth of the Year-Clara Martin: Clara has been with our agency for a few years and we’ve just seen such great growth with her. She has had a mentor for the past year and they’ve made a great connection. Clara was also selected to go to Tim Horton’s camp and she had an absolute blast and it was a great big step on her behalf, being a little shy and stuff, we were so proud of her.

The celebration also featured a couple of guest speakers, including the Mayor of Humboldt, BHP and the Executive Director of BBBS Saskatchewan.
