Northern Bears come close but fall to Sharks in opening game of season

Prince Albert’s AAA female hockey team played their hearts out in the first game of the regular season on Sunday.

In the end, though, it was the Battlefords AAA Sharks that took the victory on home ice winning 5-3.

The Sharks got the first two goals of the game from Greir Slabaida and Alexie Palchinski before Sasha Malenfant scored the first of her two goals for the Bears to close the first period at 2-1 for Battlefords.

Malenfant tied the game just 43 seconds into the second period with assists from Claudia Lammers and Jasmine Kohl.

That tie remained almost a minute left in the second period when Sawyer Norman scored on the powerplay to give the sharks back their one-goal lead.

After Battlefords made it 4-2, Claudia Lammers scored with just over seven minutes left to bring the game closer to 4-3. However, that’s as close as they got as Mardi Wagner notched the insurance goal on the powerplay with less than five minutes to go to secure the 5-3 victory.

Annika Neufeld was stellar in net, making 34 saves for the Bears.

The Northern Bears are now getting ready for their first two home games of the season as they welcome the Saskatoon Stars to the Art Hauser Centre on October 1 and 2.
