National Day for Truth and Reconciliation events are occurring in the tri-communities this week.

Local schools such as La Ronge’s Churchill Community High School have been observing it since Monday as part of Truth and Reconciliation Week activities. Students wore beaded attire on Monday and then kokum scarfs and Métis sashes on Tuesday. On Wednesday, students wore ribbon shirts and dresses, and on Thursday, they wore orange shirts and did the Walk for Wenjack.

On Friday, Kikinahk Friendship Centre is hosting a come-and-go pancake breakfast from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. All children need to be accompanied by an adult and the event is in honour of truth and reconciliation.

The Lac La Ronge Indian Band is also hosting events at the urban reserve starting at 11 a.m. It will begin with a march from the band office to urban reserve to honour residential school survivors and those who never made it home.

There will be traditional dancers, Woodland Cree traditions and activities, and a community lunch at noon. Participants are encouraged to wear orange.

The band office and La Ronge municipal office will both be closed to observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The Air Ronge office will remain open, but staff have been encouraged to participate in community events.
