Temperatures in La Ronge are well-above average for this time of year.

That’s according to Environment and Climate Change Canada Meteorologist Terri Lang, who explained the average high as of Oct. 4 was 11 C during the day and 1 C at night.

On Tuesday, it reached 19 C in La Ronge and the overnight low is forecasted to be 3 C.

“I think any days we get like that at this time of year are a bonus,” she said. “The weather we will see next week is sort of more along the lines of what we should be getting.”

With the exception of some clouds on Wednesday, it’s expected to be sunny until at least Thanksgiving. The temperature will reach the mid to high teens and only on Wednesday night is it forecasted to dip below the freezing point.

Lang noted satellite imagery shows smoke from wildfires continuing to pass through La Ronge on Tuesday and she added a special air quality statement remain in effect. Poor air quality is being reported in Candle Lake, Narrow Hill and Lac La Ronge Provincial Parks, La Ronge, Montreal Lake, Pinehouse Lake and Prince Albert National Park.

“It looks like quite a nice weekend coming up,” Lang said. “It will be a bit of a cold morning on Thursday, but the ridge will build back in, so we are expecting some warmer temperatures and dry conditions again for the weekend. Keeping in mind how dry it is, folks need to be careful with fires.”

According to data from Environment Canada, La Ronge had the second warmest and driest September out of 59 years of record keeping. That’s in contrast to spring and summer, which were some of the wettest months on record.

“It’s pretty surprising how fast things turned around because we had kind of a slow start to summer,” Lang said. “Spring was late and everyone was complaining, then we got a really active storm season. All of a sudden it turned warm and dry and everything turned around.”

Lang warned, however, colder temperatures are on the way next week. She said a weather system will move in and bring rain or even snow to the region.
