Homeless shelter planning Thanksgiving meal

The Battlefords area homeless and those in need won’t go hungry this Thanksgiving.

The emergency shelter, called Miwasin Kikinaw: Our Home is Good, operated by Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs Inc. (BATC), will provide a nutritious dinner with all the fixings to celebrate the holiday.

A sit-down meal will be offered on Friday from 2 to 6 p.m. for residents/clients of the shelter and those who use its services, as well as for people in the community who are in need. Take-away dinners will also be available.

BATC’s chief operations officer Terrance Thomas said preparations are underway to make sure everyone has a hot meal in the spirit of Thanksgiving.

“It’s very important,” he said. “If I wasn’t going home I would be there myself… to sit there and eat, and share with our community members.”

The Thanksgiving dinner will include turkey, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, gravy, vegetables and fresh bread.

There will also be tasty pumpkin pie for dessert to follow.

“It’s for anybody who is in need, for our homeless community, and those who use our facilities,” Thomas said.

He also took the opportunity to thank BATC’s local community partners including the Discovery Co-op for helping with donations as well, to help make sure more people and families have a warm healthy meal for Thanksgiving.
