Prince Albert Toppers searching for coaches

Oct 6, 2022 | 3:00 PM

Tryouts for the Prince Albert Optimist Toppers Volleyball Club will take place later this month, but unless more coaches can be found, there may be more girls sitting on the sidelines.

Club president and treasurer Tammy McKay, explained to paNOW as with many volunteer groups, COVID had a big impact and volunteer numbers have declined, especially in coaching roles.

“Experienced coaches are in high demand among the many youth sports clubs within the Prince Albert area,” she said

The Toppers typically have 12-16 teams, but currently have only half of the coaches required to lead teams, especially for the older age groups.

“The executive would like to have a team for all players; however, the reality is that the Club is going to have to make the difficult decision to not place players on teams because of the lack of coaches if we don’t get more coaches before tryouts,” McKay said.

The Toppers Club is a Sask Volleyball-accredited volleyball organization that offers developmental volleyball to girls aged 12-18. The Club competition season runs from January to May, however, there is now the option to practice in December.

In 2022, the Toppers celebrated 40 years as a Club and several of the original Club founders are involved with the Club today.

McKay explained the Toppers try to place coaches with coaching experience and coaching certification in head coach roles. Often the assistant coach is a parent or a coach with less experience but are wanting to grow as a coach.

Coaches are provided travel allowances for attendance at SaskCups and Provincial Volleyball tournaments; as well, the Club pays for training and certification.

Tryouts are scheduled to take place on Oct. 30 and Nov. 6.
