The Battlefords North Stars stretched their season-opening winning streak to nine games Friday in North Battleford, with a 2-1 win over the Weyburn Red Wings.

Goaltender, Justen Maric led the way with a 39-save performance in the victory, while Kian Bell and Keiton Klein notched a power play goal apiece to make the difference.

Bell’s fifth of the season opened the scoring on a North Stars 5-on-3, with less than a second to go on the clock in the first period.

The tally was set up by a clean faceoff win by centreman, Holden Doell with just 2.6 seconds to go. Doell pushed the puck through the legs of the defending centre off the won draw for a quick shot late. Picking up the rebounce, Zane Florence knocked the puck to Bell to ring in the 1-0 tally.

In the second, Klein’s power play marker on a laser wrister from the right circle came off a crisp cross-seem pass by captain, Jake Southgate to make it 2-0.

The goal moves Klein into a tie atop the league goal leaderboard with eight goals on the season along with teammate, Steven Kesslering (eight games played) and Maguire Razlaff (11 games played).

While Klein’s marker would also serve as the game winner, the Wings did keep it close to the final buzzer. Ethan Willans scored his third of the season to cut his team’s deficit to 2-1, though that is as close as the visitors came on the night.

Justen Maric took home first star honours Friday night, stopping 39 of 40 shots, and is now 2-0 with a 2.49 goals against average and .932 save percentage this season. (Twitter/MartyMartyPxP1)

The North Stars and Red Wings will now get just under 24 hours before they meet again for the second game of the teams’ back-to-backs this weekend.

Saturday’s game will be back at the Access Communications Centre in North Battleford, and will be available on 1050 CJNB. The Ultra Print Pregame Show will begin at 7 p.m., with puck drop at 7:30 p.m.
