It was a story 34 years in the making, with a happy ending. Gord and Elizabeth Schneider are grateful they were reunited with Gord’s wedding band after they thought it may have been lost forever.

On Oct. 3, a wedding band was turned into staff at the city’s waste management facility. The ring had unique features and the city used its social media channels to try and locate the owner. The Schneiders describe the ring as one of a kind with immeasurable sentimental value.

Finding it wasn’t straightforward for the Schneiders. They gave up on finding the ring and started to talk to the original goldsmith to make a replacement for the ring made 34 years ago.

The wedding band was made by melting down gold from other jewelry the couple had.

Instead of starting to make a new ring right away, the goldsmith suggested waiting a few days in case they found it. The wait was worth it.

While waiting, Elizabeth ran into a neighbour at Walmart. They started to chat and the topic of the ring came up. The friend told Elizabeth about a social media post she saw from the city about a lost ring.

After a few calls and a visit to the city office, the ring was back on Gord’s finger.

Elizabeth is relieved the ring is back where it belongs.

“It was really lucky. And it was really lucky that the guy who found it, it was so honest [of him] to give it to one of the staff members. I mean, that was really, really nice,” she said.

Gord is astonished at the odds of finding something so small at the waste management facility.

“Happy wasn’t the word. It was unbelievable. I mean, what’s the chances of finding one when it’s at the dump?”

In a social media post, the city said staff are happy with their role in uniting the ring back with the couple and thanked all who shared the social media post.
