The Battlefords AAA Stars got on the board with their first win of the season in style Wednesday, taking home a 5-0 victory over the P.A. Mintos in front of the hometown crowd at the Access Communications Centre.

Forwards Dayne Henry and Lee Burden each scored a pair to lead the way in the win, while goaltender, Matthew Ofukany stopped all 21 shots he faced, and Jack Forrester added his second of the season.

Head coach Dale Grayston said it was great to see the group rewarded for their hard work of late, and growth through the early part of the season.

“We were pretty proud of them, we had been doing some good things even through some of the early losses and you could see us improving in a lot of areas, and last night I think you saw us take another step forward,” Grayston said. “The effort level of our players was something else, and it was fun to watch.”

The game remained scoreless through the first, with Henry’s back-to-back tallies coming just 13 seconds apart, less than two minutes into the second frame to make it 2-0 Battlefords quickly.

Burden’s first then made it 3-0 on a fast-break on goal from the blue line-in prior to the second intermission, with Forrester’s unassisted marker early in the third and Burden’s second of the night from Kash Alger-East in his AAA debut and Tyce Penrod, capping the evening’s scoring.

Grayston spoke to the play of the Henry and Burden lines as a real key to the team’s success.

“Dayne [Henry] and his line with [Ayden] Belanger and [Cohen] Noreikat were really gritty and around the blue paint all night, and Lee [Burden] really hustled last night and found some open ice where his linemates were able to spot him with good speed and jumping into open areas,” Grayston said.

“As a team, we were quick to checks, and got to a lot of pucks first which I think made a big difference.”

The Stars will now look to build on Wednesday’s win, heading into their return to action Saturday night against the Warman Wildcats at Warman’s Legends Centre. Puck drop Saturday will be at 7:30 p.m.
