Prince Albert athletes rise to top at provincial fitness competition

An event, advertised as Saskatchewan largest fitness festival, was held over the weekend in Saskatoon and a number of Prince Albert athletes rose to the challenge.

Jodi Tournier and Vicki MacPherson, finished second and third respectively in the Elite Female Masters Division of Voodoo 2022. This year’s event featured three divisions for partners, plus two elite individuals divisions (open & masters).

“It was the first time I’ve competed alone rather than on a team so I was proud of myself for attempting something out of my comfort zone,” Tournier told paNOW.

Over the weekend, athletes are subjected to a number of strength and cardio challenges. For Tournier, she admitted her personal toughest event was a combination of dumbbell devil’s press and rope climbs.

“The dumbbells were a weight that required me to dig deep but all of the events were difficult all weekend. Six events in two days is a fair amount of volume,” she explained.

Tournier, who is also a coach at SaskPro, said one thing she often hears is how intimidated people are to start a fitness program.

“It really is the best gift you can give yourself. I feel much better at almost 50 than I did at 30 and I’m certainly stronger,” she said.

MacPherson, who is well known for her marathon skills, and is planning to compete in April at the Boston marathon, credited Crossfit for making her a better runner. And encouraged other women to try it out.

“You’ll never regret it and make a great group of fitness-minded friends for life,” she said.

With respect to this weekend’s competition, a first for MacPherson, she said she most enjoyed the fact that no matter what club you came from, or who you were competing against, everyone was so supportive and cheering each other on.

In total, six members of SaskPro competed including 13-year-old Anthony Luciano who competed in the open men’s division.

Pure Athetics was also represented in the Masters category with Ginelle Olsen and Noreen Reed. Taylor Olsen was also at the event.
