Carlton, St. Mary victorious in round one of playoffs, both advance to semi-finals

SASKATOON, SKThe Carlton Crusaders and St. Mary Marauders were still standing after a busy Thursday night for high school football at SMF Field in Saskatoon.

The Crusaders ended the Walter Murray Marauders’ season with a 20-15 comeback win while the St. Mary Marauders pulled off the upset over the Centennial Chargers, winning 22-13.

The last time the Crusaders played Walter Murray, it ended in a 28-0 shutout win for PA. But on Thursday night, Carlton struggled in the first half and only managed seven points by the time the second quarter was over.

The Marauders found themselves up 15-7 at halftime and that’s the biggest lead that Murray would hold because Carlton made the most of their opportunities in the second half and ended up scoring 13 points to come from behind and steal the win.

Quarterback Sullivan Smith-Windsor threw for 184 yards on 11 of 18 passing attempts with two interceptions and one touchdown. He also rushed for an additional 94 yards on 17 carries. Tazmin Smith-Windsor rushed for 106 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries while Tristan O’Connell posted 86 receiving yards and one touchdown on five catches.

Walter Murray quarterback Jayden Mansfield threw for 13 yards on just two passing attempts while rushing for 12 yards on three carries. Running back Datiel Fountaine was the offensive workhorse for the Marauders, rushing for 168 yards with one touchdown on 18 carries. He also managed to score a 104-yard pick-six in the second quarter.

With the win, Carlton advances to the semi-finals where they’ll meet the Holy Cross Crusaders in the semi-finals.

The St. Mary Marauders managed to pull off the big 22-13 upset win over Centennial to send the Chargers packing, ending their season.

St. Mary led the game from start to finish and they can thank their run game for the massive boost. The underdogs prevailed by keeping the ball on the ground, posting an incredible 376 rushing yards compared to Cents’ 76 rushing yards.

The Marauders had seven different players run the ball in the contest with each one rushing for more than ten yards, three of which had more than 50 rushing yards each. Those three players were Lukas Robin, Corban Taylor, and Tyson Prokopetz who combined for 243 rushing yards and two touchdowns, courtesy of Robin. Griffin Johns also found the scoreboard for St. Mary, rushing for 47 yards and one touchdown on three carries.

Centennial managed to beat St. Mary in the passing department with quarterback Carter Hunt throwing for 129 yards and one touchdown on 12 of 21 passing attempts. Running back Colby Mcmahon ran for 54 yards and one touchdown on 12 carries while adding 14 receiving yards and one touchdown on one catch.

The Marauders now advance into the semi-finals where they’ll face off against the undefeated St. Joseph Guardians.
