Getting naked for a good cause

A fundraiser for the Lakeland Curling Club is leaving just a little to the imagination.

The annual Naked calendar sales and accompanying raffle draw have been going since May. While demand was high over the summer, club board member Leslie Blacklock noted there comes a point where people get tired of selling tickets.

“We just don’t want to lose out, maybe someone is still thinking I really like that calendar but didn’t know it was out,” she said.

Raffle tickets are $25 and come with a free calendar. Proceeds go to support the curling club and help with the maintenance and upkeep of the Anderson Community Centre. Blacklock noted they’ve sold enough calendars so far to cover their own expenses, but need to consider some bills.

“We just got our rocks sharpened that was very expensive; we have a chiller system with our ice plant and you know it’s an old building, it’s an old system,” she said.

As part of the calendar, local residents and celebrities are asked to pose nude, albeit covered in some creative fashion whether it’s some well-placed pumpkins or even a tool belt. Perry Hulowski, former owner of Perry’s Automotive, was among those to agree.

“It was a little different. The shoot was done in late September so it was kinda cool out but it was quite tactfully done,” he said. “It was quite humourous.”

Hulowski has a cabin at the lake and has been a proud member of the community for 30 years plus.

“It’s a great community, great cause, and anything I can do to help out locally, just 100 per cent,” he said.

Justin Hurl also appears in the calendar, and said he was glad to help out the club.

“It was definitely outside of my comfort zone. I was nervous about it but my wife really encouraged me to do it. Not sure why she wanted that so much,” he joked. “I knew it was all in good fun and it was for a good cause so I decided to go ahead.”

In Prince Albert, the calendars can be found at a number of businesses including Perry’s Automotive, the Investors Group, and Remax. In Lakeland, people can to the Tempo CL gas station, T’s Salon and Spa or Ambrose Pharmacy.

The raffle draw will take place on March 15th at the Anderson Community Centre. The three three cash prizes are $2500, $1500, and $1000 and winners are not required to be in attendance. Jayson Marsh, a committee member, can be seen in the calendar holding his favourite curling rock.

“$25 and you get a free calendar with all that talent in there,” he said.
