The Fred Light Museum ‘Honour Our Veterans’ banner program is once again running in Battleford.

An unveiling ceremony will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 28 at the Alex Dillabough Centre to recognize this year’s program.

“We will have a video of all the new veterans that are being honoured,” museum manager Bernadette Leslie said. “Then, we are going to replay [a video of the banners] of all the veterans over the years.”

Leslie said a total of 111 banners so far have been erected on the streets of Battleford for the banner program, including 14 new banners.

The Fred Light Museum is partnering with the Battleford Royal Canadian Legion Branch #9 and the Town of Battleford on the banner project.

Leslie said the banners already adorn 22nd Street, as well as the block where the Town Hall is located, and part of Fourth Avenue.

The banners will stay up through to close to the end of November.

“It’s a good way to honour the veterans,” Leslie said.

It’s moving to see the pictures and names of the veterans up on the banners during the Remembrance period, when people are thinking about their loved ones who have served.

“It brings it more real to a person,” Leslie said.

She said people can read about the wars and learn about the history, but when they see the actual faces of the people who did go to war and sacrifice so much it brings the issue closer to home for them.

Leslie said there will also be three or four banners dedicated to veterans who did not make it home from war, and made the ultimate sacrifice for their country with their service.

Leslie mentioned more communities are taking an interest the veterans banner program. Cut Knife will have its own veterans banner program this year as well.

“[It’s] the first time this year,” she said. “I understand they sold 18 banners for their area, which is wonderful. It would be great to see all the communities participate in the banner program about honouring our veterans.”

Leslie is asking anyone from the public wishing to attend the upcoming unveiling ceremony in Battleford to call her in advance, so she can plan ahead.
