The Nipawin Hawks are back in the win column after a 4-3 shoot-out victory over the Weyburn Red Wings Saturday.

Riding a four-game losing skid going into Saturday’s rematch with Weyburn that started with a 4-1 Red Wings win Friday the Hawks started strong in front of the fans at the Centennial Arena. Rylan Lefebvre and Maguire Ratzlaff opened the scoring for Nipawin in the first period, Lefebvre scored his second goal of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) season while Ratzlaff’s was his league-leading 14th goal of the year.

Weyburn did battle back in the first with a pair of goals of their own including former Hawk Carter Wickenheiser beating Jackson Fellner to tie the game at 2-2 before the conclusion of the first period.

The teams didn’t find the scoreboard again until the third period, Weyburn took their first lead of the game halfway through the stanza, but shortly thereafter Nipawin defenseman Eric Robbie scored his first career SJHL goal in his 70th game to knot the game at 3-3 and force overtime.

“It’s a relief, it feels amazing,” the three-year Hawk told northeastNOW after the game. “You play the game right on both ends you get rewarded. It took this but I am glad it finally happened.”

For the second time this season the two clubs needed a shoot-out to have a winner, in the fourth round Carson Dobson beat Eric Kahl to secure the victory for the Hawks. Robbie said his first career goal moment could have had a bitter taste, but the win was crucial for the team.

“It’s nice to finally get back in the win column. We’ve been playing better and it’s nice to finally get a win and know we can turn the other way and start a winning streak this time,” he added.

Fellner was acquired by Nipawin this week to shore up the goaltending, the 19-year-old Regina product and former Red Wing made 29 stops through regulation and overtime before turning aside three of four shooters in the shoot-out to win his Hawk debut. Kahl made 36 stops in the loss, two Hawks scored in the shoot-out.

Nipawin is now off for the week and will host the La Ronge Ice Wolves on Friday at the Centennial Arena. Robbie said having another week to dwell on another losss would have been hard to take.

“This relieves a lot of pressure,” he said. “Now we can go into the week feeling good. Get back to practice, work hard, and come next weekend we do the same thing again.”

Face-off Friday is 7 p.m. The Hawks travel to Melville on Saturday, a game you can hear on Rona Nipawin Hawks Hockey on 750 Beach Radio.
