Injuries, suspensions, or other absences from the lineup often create opportunities for young players in the WHL. With the Prince Albert Raiders still down several bodies to suspension and international gameplay, they’re giving an opportunity to one of their prospects whose star is on the rise.

Forward Luke Moroz will make his WHL debut tomorrow night when the Raiders welcome the Tri-City Americans to the Art Hauser Centre. Moroz was the Raiders’ first pick, 15th overall, in the 2022 prospects draft.

“It was pretty unexpected,” Moroz said. “I had just finished up a game and I got a call from (Raiders GM Curtis Hunt) right after.”

The move from the Raiders comes with forward Evan Herman serving the second game of a two-game suspension that night. Also away from the team are forwards Cole Peardon and Ryder Ritchie, both of whom have been invited to represent Canada at the World U17 championships in British Columbia.

Moroz tore up the AA ranks in Saskatchewan last season, leading the U15 circuit with an incredible 108 points in just 27 games played. Moroz attended Raiders camp, scored in the Green and White game, and got into some exhibition games with the Raiders before heading back to the AAA ranks.

“It makes me more comfortable and not as nervous as I normally would be,” Moroz said. “It’s pretty fast, but I think I can get used to it pretty quickly.”

Once back in AAA with the Regina Pat Canadiens, the 15-year-old wasted no time making an offensive impact in his first season in the U18 AAA league. He’s posted six goals and 14 points in his first 10 games with the Pat Cs. That leaves him second on his team and third among 15-year-old skaters in the league.

The Raiders will try to snap a three-game losing skid when they host the Americans tomorrow night. Puck drop is 7 p.m. You can catch the game on 900 CKBI.
