Warmest October on record for La Ronge, more snow on the way

Nov 2, 2022 | 3:28 PM

October was the warmest in La Ronge out of 57 years of record-keeping.

That’s according to Environment and Climate Change Canada data, which shows La Ronge was on average 4 Celsius warmer than any other October in nearly six decades.

The average temperature in October was 6.3 C compared to the normal 2.3 C.

“That’s pretty significant,” meteorologist Terri Lang said. “All of Western Canada was well above average. British Columbia, particularly, and Alberta even into Manitoba. Saskatchewan did come in above average, but it was the central regions that were the most above average. La Ronge really stood out that way.”

Lang explained the above normal temperatures are now over for La Ronge as an estimated 10 centimeters of snow fell Tuesday night and into Wednesday. Another 10 to 15 cm of snow is expected in the area by tomorrow.

A snowfall warning initiated Nov. 1 remain in effect for Montreal Lake, La Ronge, Pinehouse Lake, and Candle Lake, La Ronge and Narrow Hills Provincial Parks. Those travelling this week are encouraged to check the Highway Hotline and to stay informed about the weather forecast.

Lang noted the weather in October was so favourable due to a high pressure system that lingered over Western Canada. That system kept warm air over the entire region and diverted other systems that were full of snow and rain.

“That’s finally collapsed, so we’re in more of a typical November pattern,” she said. “We are seeing some pretty cold air to move in next week. I think the party is over in respect to the warmth.”

The temperature will remain freezing throughout the week and progressively become colder. More snow is forecasted for the weekend and again next week. The high for Nov. 2 is -2 C with a low of -7 C.
