Stuck cars and snow in northeast Saskatchewan

There was heavy snow and lots of stuck vehicles in parts of northeast Saskatchewan.

In Nipawin, two truck operators were going non-stop over the weekend.

“Definitely ended up with a couple of feet of snow in some places, lots of cars stuck and people not being able to get around,” Aaron Abar, owner of Nipawin Towing said. “Lot of people stuck in town, in their driveways and stuff, lots of drifts, the town is doing the best they can, but it’s a big job.”

It was also a busy weekend in Hudson Bay.

“We had people stuck in their driveways, people stuck in the ditches, people stuck uptown,” Cory Gulutzan with Nick’s Auto Body and Towing said. “North of Hudson Bay, they got almost a foot and a half of snow and in town here we got almost a foot and the drifting makes it worse. I pull a car out of a snowbank, and you can hardly tell there was a car there.”

He added by Sunday afternoon snow plowing in the town of Hudson Bay, and on highways in the region were making a big difference.

“A lot of the stuff I’m getting today is remnants. People got stuck and they said we’ll wait till the plow comes through and we’ll get the tow truck to come pull us out,” he said.

In the town of Choiceland, at least one business closed early on Saturday, and crews spent much of Sunday plowing.

“Our crew was out on Sunday, early morning Sunday, pushing, because of the snowfall. We probably got anywhere from a foot to a foot and a half,” Choiceland Mayor Rob Mardell said. “There are people just staying put in their yard until some of the snow gets moved.”

Many communities throughout the region spent Sunday and Monday digging out. As for Tisdale, conditions were fairly typical.

“In some areas, the streets were basically clear,” Town Administrator Brad Hvidston said. “In other areas we’ve got two and a half to three feet on some of the streets, depending on how the snow fell.”

He added the main streets in Tisdale have all been cleared.

It’s similar in Melfort, where city crews have cleared main streets and are starting on secondary streets.

However, more snow is in the forecast. In Melfort and Hudson Bay, Environment Canada is forecasting five to 10 centimeters of snow Monday night, and the possibility of a little more during the day on Tuesday.
