Meadow Lake RCMP warn of possible scams, increased vehicle thefts
Meadow Lake RCMP is warning people to watch out for possible scams as the holiday season approaches, and an increase in vehicle thefts. The warnings are part of a monthly report sent out to the media about service calls for the month of October.
Police say they expect an uptick in phone and email scams and ask local businesses to be mindful of individuals purchasing large quantities of gift cards. One common scam involves individuals being encouraged to purchase gift cards for the scammer. The victim shares the gift card numbers with the scammer and ultimately loses their money.
RCMP also encourage people to talk to elderly family members to warn them about possible scams. If you’re the recipient of a scam phone call or email, police ask you to contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
The report also includes a warning about vehicle thefts. With the cold weather, police remind people to not leave a vehicle unlocked and running. RCMP say doing so makes your vehicle an easier target for theft and they have noted an increase in vehicle theft over the last few weeks.
