A Grade 12 student from Carpenter High School in Meadow Lake is currently in Egypt representing North American youth at an International Conference.

Sean Bernard was selected to attend the United Nations Conference of the Parties (COP). COP focuses on addressing the impacts of climate change and how governments and people from around the world can work to reduce the impact of climate change.

In late September, Bernard joined students from 60 other countries for the launch of a virtual classroom where work on the Global Child Manifesto started. Bernard is the lead North American voice for the presentation of the manifesto, who took place at the conference on Thursday.

The manifesto outlines seven priority areas— food production and security, green energy, waste reduction, skill development, new technologies, food education, and funding for children.

Bernard was accompanied to Egypt by his teacher Tanis Crawford. In an online call on Wednesday, Crawford talked about how proud she is of Bernard and how he has played a pivotal role in the creation of the Global Child Manifesto. Crawford says Sean’s public speaking skills and leadership skills continue to improve every day.

Bernard is enrolled in Northern Lifestyles 20, a Northwest School Division Virtual Learning School pilot project. The project is in its initial development phase. Students in Northern Lifestyles 20 investigate and negotiate personal, cultural, and community identity and sustainability through skills development, cultural experience, and experiential learning.

In a media release, the Northwest School Division says they’re proud to have Bernard represent Carpenter High School, Meadow Lake, and students from across North America.

The COP 27 conference taking place in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt continues until Nov. 16.
