Wilkie’s Brooklyn Salewski has committed to the next chapter of her hockey journey with the Lakeland Rustlers for the 2023-24 season.

Salewski, who is currently in her third year with the Battlefords AAA Sharks, told battlefordsNOW it’s something she’s looking forward to, as playing post-secondary has been a goal for some time.

“It’s definitely a great opportunity and I think it’s really going to be a lot of fun,” she said. “Lakeland has one of the courses I was looking at on the crop side of things, and it’s always been my goal to play the highest level of hockey I can, so I’m looking forward to the opportunity.”

In the classroom, Salewski will be taking the Crop Technology course out of the Vermillion campus.

A veteran of the Battlefords Sharks program, Salewski sits tied for third in team scoring this year with three points, in addition to providing a strong defensive presence, often being relied upon to play against top opposition.

That two-way play is something the tenacious forward prides herself in.

“I’m not always the top scorer, but I do seem to be able to help keep a lot of pucks out of the net even as a forward, and be in the shot-lane when I should be and make the right plays when I can,” the 17-year-old said, adding that as she looks ahead to the next chapter, she’s thankful for those who helped her get to this point.

“I’ve just got to thank all the people who have coached me because if it weren’t for them, I wouldn’t know what I know and be able to do what I do,” she added.

Head coach of the AAA Sharks, Ricci Girolami said Salewski’s commitment to the Rustlers came as no surprise having seen first-hand the dedication she puts into the sport.

“I always knew Brooklyn had it within herself to go play at the next level; she’s very committed, she plays hard and her practice effort is 110 percent,” Girolami said. “For her, going to the next level is just the natural next step and she deserves it. She’s committed in all she does, so Lakeland is lucky to have her, and she’ll make an impact on the team with her work ethic and drive.”
