Hawks hit highway to Kindersley for back-to-back clashes with Klippers

The Nipawin Hawks are in Kindersley this weekend for two important Saskatchewan Junior Hockey league (SJHL) matchups with the Klippers.

The Hawks will try to snap a two game losing skid that saw them lose to the Battlefords North Stars and the Flin Flon Bombers. But according to Hawks head coach Tad Kozun, he feels the club hung with the SJHL’s top-end talent.

“I think we have played our last two games well, despite the results,” he said. “I think we have taken the steps forward to show that we can play with those teams that are at the top right now.”

Nipawin’s last win was a 5-4 shootout victory over Kindersley on Nov. 11 at the Centennial Arena. With just eight road games played so far out of 21 the Hawks have played Kozun said getting the players out of the ‘Cage’ and into hostile territory is enticing.

“I am really happy with the guys taking a step forward. We’re excited for this weekend, get out of Nipawin, get on the road, and spend some time together,” he said.

The Klippers currently sit in 12th place in the SJHL six points behind Nipawin, the Hawks hold down the last SJHL postseason spot in the standings. Kozun said four critical points are up for grabs on Friday and Saturday against a team pushing for the playoffs.

“It’s one of those weekends where we’re playing a team trying to find their way through as well. It’s one of those weekends we have to take full advantage of, make sure we’re ready and collect four points,” Kozun concluded.

Face-off of both nights from the West Central Events Centre is 7:30 p.m., the pregame show of Rona Nipawin Hawks Hockey on 750 Beach Radio begins at 7:15 p.m.
