Raiders win wild one against Tigers

PRINCE ALBERT, SK – The Prince Albert Raiders did some tiger hunting on Saturday night, defeating the Medicine Hat Tigers 5-4 at the Art Hauser Centre.

The win comes four days after defeating the Moose Jaw Warriors 3-1 back on Tuesday night.

“Overall efforts, pretty good,” said Raiders head coach Jeff Truitt. “It was a grind it out type of game. There was no doubt there was a lot of intensity here tonight, which is good. It was nice to see Evan Herman really respond for us; Chaika played great, made some key save for us in the third period. But I like the overall intensity of out game which is what we needed.”

Evan Herman earned the games first star, having netted two goals and an assist while Sloan Stanick earned the second star for the same performance. Landon Kosior had a goal and an assist for PA while Keaton Sorensen, Carson Latimer, Hayden Pakkala, and Easton Kovacs each potted assists.

When asked about what it was like to wear the “C” for the first time, captain Evan Herman said that it’s a huge honour to lead this team.

“We lost a good teammate, more so a best friend with Nolan,” he said. “They’re some big shoes to fill. He was a great guy, great Raider, and I wish him nothing but the best. It’s just a huge honour.”

Shane Smith, Brendan Lee, Tyler MacKenzie, and Cayden Lindstrom found the back of the net for the tigers tonight, while Dru Krebs, Owen MacNeil, Andrew Basha, and Reid Andresen each had helpers.

Tikhon Chaika got the start tonight where he made 22 saves to help the Raiders improve to 8-12-2-0 on the campaign.

Evan May was between the pipes for Medicine Hat where he made 24 stops as the Tigers now fall to 6-10-4-1 on the year.

COMPLETE BOX SCORE

The opening frame lasted nearly 40 minutes and saw a little bit of everything.

Things got started with the Tigers getting on the board. Krebs connected with Smith who scored his seventh of the season to put Medicine Hat up by one.

Some scary moments followed the goal however, and it started with Tikhon Chaika.

Brayden Boehm was driving towards the goal when he ran out of room and ended up having no other choice but to run Chaika over. The Raiders netminder was a bit shaken up after the fact but stayed in the game. Boehm was given a two-minute minor for his actions.

Just seconds later and this time it was Sloan Stanick who went down. A shot from the point deflected off a Tigers defender and hit Stanick near his eye. Play was almost immediately blown dead so the trainers could attend to Stanick, but he managed to get up under his own power and skate to the bench while covering the left side of his face. Thankfully, he would return to the game wearing a full cage.

Fast-forward to the final minutes of the frame and another player went down with an apparent back injury. Tigers forward Oasiz Wiesblatt took a hit from a Raiders defender that spun him around in the opposite direction of his momentum, causing his body to twist awkwardly. Wiesblatt needed to be helped off the ice where he did not return.

The period was capped off by a fight by Kurtis Smythe and Keaton Sorensen. The tilt lasted no more than five seconds but after both players went down, they still continued fighting as the officials were attempting to break up the fight. It took almost 20 seconds to get both players separated before the each received five-minute penalties for fighting.

Medicine Hat led 1-0 after one.

The Tigers killed off a long 5-on-3 penalty kill and turned that into offense on the other end. Basha left a drop pass out for Lee who one timed it far side on Chaika to double their lead.

Not too long after and tempers would boil over yet again. Newly named Raiders captain Evan Herman dropped the gloves with Josh Van Mulligen where they would duke it out for a solid 30 seconds. Both players traded blows but neither of them went down, but the two of the did receive five-minutes each for fighting.

A little over 90 seconds to play in the second period and the Raiders finally got on the board.

And with 0.6 seconds left, Prince Albert tied it on the powerplay. Sorensen fed the puck to the blueline where Herman fired it towards the net. Somehow, the puck made it through the sea of bodies in front and into the back of the net to tie the game up at two apiece going into the third.

It took the Raiders less than five-minutes before they took the lead. Pakkala and Kosior played pass on the blueline before Kosior walked in, faked a shot, then went high on May to give PA their first lead of the game.

The lead would last just under 30 seconds when the Tigers capitalized on the powerplay. Andresen’s initial shot was stopped but MacKenzie was there to put away the rebound to tie it back up.

Some good luck would go in favour of the Raiders though as they regained the lead with nine minutes to go. Kovacs’ point shot was tipped in by Stanick in front for his second of the night, and to put PA up 4-3.

That goal sparked trouble for the Tigers as they completely fell apart at the end of the game. PA added another goal thanks to a pretty passing play from Stanick and Herman. Stanick sauced the puck over a Medicine Hat defender to Herman who made no mistake potting his second of the night.

The Tigers pulled May and managed to score with one second left on the clock but the damage was done as the Raiders won 5-4.

Prince Albert now has a bit of a break in their schedule before they head to Calgary to kick off their 3-in-3 weekend against the Hitmen on Friday night.
