It was a trip to remember for Kikinahk Friendship Centre employees who travelled to Regina to attend the 109th Grey Cup on the weekend.

“This was the first time I had ever been to it. It was way too cold. I wasn’t dressed properly, but I honestly had a really good time,” said executive director Ron Woytowich. “We had fantastic seats. When you looked in front there was the whole field. I think we were only eight rows up from the bottom and right to the left of us was the massive screen they have.

“If you couldn’t see either end, all you had to do was watch the screen,” Woytowich added. “It was really good other than it was cold and there was a wind.”

In all, 41 people associated with Kikinahk attended the Grey Cup. Every employee was invited to go and they were also invited to bring one special guest. Woytowich explained the trip was a good way to boost morale, noting they met up with another group from the Flin Flon Friendship Centre in Saskatoon.

“We took our bus from La Ronge, but some drove and Flin Flon drove their own vehicles to Saskatoon,” he said. “We stayed the night in Saskatoon on Saturday night and then Saturday morning we all hopped on our big bus and went to Regina for the game. We drove back after the game and got back to Saskatoon to the Travelodge at 1:30 a.m. and stayed the night there and came home Monday morning.”

The 2022 Grey Cup was won by the Toronto Argonauts, who beat the Winnipeg Blue Bombers by a 24-23 score. Musicians Jordan Davis, Tyler Hubbard and Josh Ross were the halftime show entertainment and there were also flybys by the Canadian Snowbirds.

“Nobody left their seat because it was pretty good entertainment,” Woytowich said.

The trip was made possible through payments Kikinahk employees contributed from their pay cheques throughout the year. Each staff member pays $75 from every cheque to participate in such events, which haven’t occurred in recent years due to COVID.

Kikinahk staff will next travel to either Puerto Vallarta or Nuevo Vallarta. They will be there for New Year’s Day.
