Beaver Blues look to stay hot against Perdue

The Battlefords Beaver Blues have hit the ground running to start the senior hockey season.

Coming off a 6-1 win in their opener last weekend against Redberry, the team will now shoot to make it two straight on their home ice in Battleford. They will host the Perdue Pirates Friday night in Saskatchewan Prairie Hockey League action.

Player/manager with the Blues Kody Wolff said it was nice to see the team get off to a strong start with the win in their home opener, as they continue to get familiar with a number of new players added to the lineup this year.

“We have a lot of new faces and lots of guys who haven’t played together before, so we’ve got to kind of get that chemistry back, but overall I think that was obviously a great start,” he said. “We’re a fun team, the guys are all great and we’re looking forward to a good season.”

The Beaver Blues feature 12 returnees from last year’s team that make it to the semi-finals of the playoffs against Turtleford, with 14 of the 25-man roster having donned the blue note in the past, and 11 new faces.

Perhaps most impressive about the team’s six-goal output in their opening game was the fact that six different players chipped in on the scoring with a goal apiece as each of Luke Fennig, Blake Fennig, Cody Kalyn, Brock Potratz, Spencer Wasmuth, and Tyler Wasmuth got on the board just a game into the season.

Wolff said that depth of attack and their ability to roll four lines will be key again heading into Friday’s matchup, as the team looks to play to their strengths as a fast group with difference-makers throughout the lineup.

“I think the big thing is we’re all fairly young this year, so we have the speed, we have the agility and the stamina, and I think that will be huge against the other teams,” Wolff said. “We can go the full 60 minutes and we have four full lines with guys who are committed, so that’s what we’re looking for tonight. We’re going to go hard, roll the lines and wear down other teams.”

Friday’s game between the Beaver Blues and Perdue Pirates will be played at Battleford Arena. Adult admission is $10, students $5, while kids 12 and under get in free. Puck drop will be at 8:30 p.m.
