Hawks add experience on Dec. 1 cut down day

The Nipawin Hawks staff made five separate roster moves on Thursday trimming their roster to 23 players.

The Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL) allows 25 players ‘cards’ to be used from now until the end of the season, the trade deadline is Jan. 10. The team announced on Dec. 1 that they have acquired veteran forward Jovan Malay from the Dauphin Kings of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League for a player development fee (PDF). General Manager Tad Kozun said Malay will provide leadership and depth for his forward group.

“We wanted to add a little more experience to our group. We know we have a lot of good prospects in our pipeline right now, that allowed us to go after a 20-year-old. It adds some experience to help our younger guys along,” Kozun said after the deadline Thursday evening.

Malay started the year in Estevan and bounced around to several teams, he settled in with the Kings and scored four goals and added 11 assists in 25 games.

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) club also announced the acquisition of Cochin, Sask. born goaltender Lowen Kenyon from the Battlefords North Stars, also for PDF. Kenyon, 18, played 13 games for the North Stars as a 17-year-old last year and had great stats including a goals-against-average of 1.93 and a save-percentage of .937. The move forced Kozun to release rookie Reid Lalonde.

“Being able to acquire him just helps settle things down back there a little bit,” Kozun said. “Jackson [Fellner] has been real good since we brought him in, but we want to make sure he’s getting pushed everyday and have that one-two punch of it doesn’t matter who is in net, anyone can play on any given night.”

To make room for Malay and still have two roster spots open ahead of the deadline in January Kozun made the tough choice to release a trio of players. Second-year centre Jake Smith was released, alongside Carter Mason and Lalonde. Kozun said the decisions and conversations with players in those situations are never easy.

“I can’t say enough good things about Jake Smith, he’s a guy that came in and won a spot last year and was getting better and better. It’s obviously a tough day saying bye to all three of them. I think we got better today and it’s part of the business in hockey,” Kozun said.

The Hawks are now off until Sunday, Dec. 4 at the Centennial Arena at 3 p.m. against Melville. The matinee game is Nipawin’s annual Teddy Bear Toss and Food Drive for the Nipawin Salvation Army.
