Nipawin Hawks’ athletic therapist Emma Galloway will be part of the hockey staff for Team Saskatchewan at the Canada Winter Games next year.

The rosters and staff were announced by Hockey Saskatchewan on Dec. 1, however the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) team posted about their long-time therapist being named to the staff on their social media Monday. The Trenton, Ont., product said she’s humbled by being a part of the group that will work with female athletes under 18 years of age and males under 16 years of age.

“It is an honour to be named to Team Saskatchewan,” she said. “Like players, athletic therapists also have goals to work at higher levels. It is an accomplishment to be named among this staff.”

This is the second year in a row Galloway has been named to the staff of Team Saskatchewan. In 2021 she was the therapist for the 2021 Western Regional Women’s U18 Championship held in Portage la Prairie, Man., Galloway said the experience of that event will make this year’s assignment more comfortable when the games begin Feb. 18.

“I think going to last year’s Western Regional Championship has helped prepare me to know what to expect. Some of the players from last year and the coaching staff for the under-18 girls are the same. It will be nice to know some people,” Galloway said.

The Canada Winter Games will be hosted by Charlottetown, P.E.I., from Feb. 18 to March 5. The female hockey competition runs from on Feb. 27 to March 5. Team Saskatchewan Women will open their tournament in Pool B, against Team British Columbia. The male hockey competition is from Feb. 19 to 25 with Team Saskatchewan opening the preliminaries in Pool A against Team New Brunswick.

The Hawks return to action Tuesday when the Yorkton Terriers visit the Centennial Arena at 7 p.m. Nipawin is seeking its fourth straight win.
