New announcement

Living Sky School Division to discontinue virtual K-Gr. 9 programming

Living Sky School Division (LSSD) announced today they will discontinue virtual programming for Kindergarten to Grade 9, due to reduced enrolment.

The school division said in a release they made the decision to end the Kindergarten to Grade 9 programming offered through the LSSD Virtual School earlier this week.

“The [virtual] school served as a great learning tool during the pandemic, but with most students returning to face-to-face learning, the decline in enrolment no longer made offering elementary services feasible,” the school division said. “The organization met with all affected staff and students to discuss transition plans earlier this week and last. The change will take effect as of Dec. 22.”

LSSD said the virtual school programming has provided the school division with many lessons, which the division will be able to use in the future as it continues to look for ways to offer more educational opportunities for all Living Sky students.

LSSD said staff affected by the decision were all offered other positions in the division, with start dates in January.

The affected students have made individual plans with the principal of the LSSD Virtual School, Sarah L’Hoir, and will begin attending their new schools when they return from the holiday break.

“LSSD Virtual was born during the pandemic to ensure we could offer students a safe alternative to in-class learning,” LSSD director of education Brenda Vickers said. “It’s fulfilled a greater purpose than was originally intended, and I’m very thankful to the staff involved for their clear vision and hard work to get our school up and running in a very short time. The programming was of a very high quality – locally developed and taught by teachers who were able to make great connections with students.”

The school division said the decision “has not been made lightly, and the understanding and cooperation of all the LSSD Virtual School staff and families is appreciated as this transition is made.”
