Melfort Fire Department’s ‘biggest fundraiser of the year’ back in-person

For the 72nd time, the Melfort Fire Department will host their annual Wing Ding.

Used as their ‘biggest fundraiser of the year’, the event is now back in-person.

Graham Calow, one of the fire captains of the department, told northeastNOW there’s a bit of added hype around the event this year after some changes were required the past couple of years.

“In those off years, we did run an online Wing Ding, so the fundraiser carried on and people were really supportive that way, but to have the actual bingo in person, it’s been a long time,” he said.

“We’ve got quite a few new members over the last three years that have never been part of an in-person, bingo Wing Ding, and so it’s exciting for them to get involved. For some of us that have been around long enough to have done the Wing Dings before, we’re really looking forward to getting back to it. We get hundreds and hundreds of people out from all over the Northeast that comes and plays bingo, so we’re just glad we can put it on again for everybody.”

The Wing Ding will begin tomorrow (Dec. 10), at the Kerry Vickar Centre, at 1:30 p.m. and is expected to run until 8 or 9, when the crowd starts to dwindle.

People will play bingo all day long, with the chance at winning a variety of Christmas-themed prizes.

There will also be an online 50/50 raffle (pandemic invention), alongside the Wing Ding, as people will have the opportunity to win up to $5000.

Tickets will be sold as one for five dollars or five for $20.

All proceeds raised will go towards specialized equipment for the department.

“It takes a lot of people to put an event like this on, the fire department members, their families and other supporters are helping to put this event on,” added Calow. “Of course, we’ve got the businesses throughout towns that help us with our prizes and just anyone that gives their time or gives in a financial way, we just appreciate everybody’s support.”

The department also said they are still looking for new members and that if anyone is interested they can visit their social media pages to fill out a brief form and someone from the department wit get back to them, as soon as they can.
