People interested in signing up to train as a lifeguard will want to take advantage of this opportunity.

The Meadow Lake Aquatic Centre has announced a new lifeguard recruitment pilot program is currently underway.

Brittani Duxbury, aquatic manager at the Meadow Lake Aquatic Centre with the City of Meadow Lake, said up to five spots are available through the program, for people eligible to work in Saskatchewan.

“It is the first time we have offered all of the programming,” she said. “We typically will offer advanced programming for National Lifeguard and Lifesaving Instructor [training] to our employees. But this is the first time we are offering it right from step one, all the way to the last step, for free.”

Interested applicants will need to submit a cover letter and resume. Then, the aquatic manager will select people for the interview process.

Candidates who are chosen will then train to receive their Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross, National Lifeguard and Lifesaving Instructor certification at no cost.

The Bronze Medallion course will start Jan. 9, 2023, while the next step, the Bronze Cross, will begin on Jan. 27, 2023.

After candidates have earned their Bronze Medallion and Cross, they will complete First Aid training.

After that, they can start work as an assistant lifeguard.

Within the next one to two years after starting, they will be trained in the National Lifeguard and Lifesaving Instructor program, which is the final step of lifeguard training.

The City of Meadow Lake is covering the costs.

Duxbury said the City was facing challenges acquiring staff in many areas, so developed the lifeguard recruitment program for the aquatic centre, as an incentive to help fill a gap.

“We just wanted to be able to overcome that barrier of [people] having to pay to take your courses to work for the Meadow Lake Aquatic Centre,” she said.

Duxbury said the aquatic centre typically doesn’t have any issues keeping lifeguards for many years after they get started.

People who are interested in the program will need to be strong swimmers before they apply.

“We recommend anyone applying to be able to swim at a Swimmer 6 [level] capacity,” Duxbury said.

During the interview process, participants will also be tested in the pool, to show they are proficient enough in the water to be able to master the training program.

Anyone who is interested in applying for the Lifeguard Recruitment Program should contact the Meadow Lake Aquatic Centre by email at: aquaticmanager@meadowlake.ca. The deadline to submit applications is Dec. 15.
