Stars head to Nipawin in search of eighth straight

Dec 10, 2022 | 3:30 PM

The Battlefords North Stars return to play Saturday night in Nipawin, in search of their eighth straight victory.

The North Stars (24-0-2-1) enter play Saturday in top spot of the league standings, and are coming off a 3-1 win over the Hawks Friday night in their home barn, looking to sweep the weekend series.

The Hawks (13-13-1-1), who saw their four-game winning streak snapped, sit seventh overall in the league standings and will shoot for a quick bounce back in their return to home ice at Centennial Arena.

The North Stars will see a return between the pipes of goaltender Josh Kotai, after a rare night’s rest, Friday. Kotai is 17-0-2-1 this season, with a league-best 1.99 goals against average and .943 save percentage.

The Hawks are likely to start Jackson Fellner, after Lowen Kenyon got the start to open the weekend. Fellner has posted an 8-4 record this year with a 3.23 goals against average and .892 save percentage.

Up front, Holden Doell’s return to the Stars lineup payed dividends right away for the Battlefords, as the 19-year-old picked up a pair of assists on Kian Bell’s two goals to lead the way in Friday’s win.

Bell and Jake Southgate are now tied atop the SJHL scoring leaders with 43 points apiece heading into Saturday’s contest, followed closely by Doell with 42 in just 21 games, still averaging a league-high 2.0 points per game.

The Hawks’ lone goal Friday night was scored by Carson Dobson, who now has goals in four straight, with five goals, seven points over his current streak.

With 24 points though 28 games, Dobson sits tied for third in Hawks’ scoring this year with defenceman Zander Stewart, trailing only Alex Johnson (29 points) and Maguire Ratzlaff (28 points) for tops on the team.

Saturday’s game will be available on 1050 CJNB. A slightly earlier start than usual, the Ultra Print Pregame Show will begin at 6:30 p.m. with puck drop to follow at 7 p.m. on the NAPA Auto Parts North Stars Hockey Broadcast.
