A 34-year-old man has been arrested and charged following an assault in Weyakwin and a pursuit by police.

Last Wednesday, RCMP received a report of an assault with a weapon. One man suffered serious, non-life-threatening injuries in the assault.

Around 3:30 p.m. that afternoon, Mounties received information of a truck suspected to be connected to the assault travelling in the area. Police eventually found the truck in the town and attempted to stop the driver.

The driver eventually drove away, and police used a spike belt to stop it at Riese Drive and Highway 102 at which time the truck crashed into an unoccupied police vehicle. The truck was able to drive away from that collision, albeit with a flat tire.

Officers were able to manouevre the truck off the road and the driver was arrested without incident. Police later found out that the truck was reported stolen the day before from Sucker River.

John Sanderson, 34, of Bell’s Point faces several charges including flight from police, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and operating while impaired.

He is due in La Ronge Provincial Court on Dec. 15. Meanwhile, Montreal Lake RCMP continues to investigate the assault in Weyakwin and is asking anyone with information to contact them or Crime Stoppers.
