A local high school was under a hold and secure order earlier Wednesday, following a report of an individual with an imitation firearm in the vicinity.

Police said in a release that at about 9:55 a.m., Battlefords RCMP received a report of an individual with an imitation firearm at North Battleford Comprehensive High School (NBCHS). The school entered into a hold and secure protocol as a result.

Police immediately responded to the location and ensured students and staff were safe. Police say the individual, a youth, was located and arrested at a home a short distance from the school.

No one was injured during the incident.

RCMP say police did not recover the reported imitation weapon.

The RCMP continue to investigate. No further details are available at this time.

Living Sky School Division (LSSD) communications representative Kelsie Valliere confirmed the hold and secure measure was taken as a precaution following an incident at NBCHS Wednesday morning.

Valliere said police were investigating in the area.

NBCHS as well as nearby Lawrence Elementary School were both put under the hold and secure order during the morning until the investigation concluded. This means the exterior doors were locked and students were being kept inside as a precaution.

Valliere said learning continued at the schools as normal, adding that police advised they were confident students were safe inside.

LSSD sent a notification to parents during the hold and secure measure and the school division board was advised as well.

According to an email from Living Sky School Division obtained by battlefordsNOW, there was an increased police presence around NBCHS and Lawrence Elementary School as police investigated a situation that occurred at the high school Wednesday morning.

At just before 12 p.m. Wednesday, LSSD advised that police have lifted the hold and secure at both schools.

An update will be provided when more information is available.
