St. Brieux Kin Club hosts ribbon cutting for new gazebo

The St. Brieux Kin Club has officially completed its “first project ever”.

The group recently held a ribbon cutting for the construction of a new gazebo and featured a special visit from Santa Claus, as well as free hot chocolate and candy canes— all while raising $250 for Telemiracle.

Established back in 2018, the Kin club originally had some decision-making to do on what they wanted to see accomplished.

“We had sent a bit of a survey out to our community, and then just amongst ourselves at the kin club, we decided that this would be something that we wanted to pursue,” explained member Angie Stevenson.

The next step was finding out exactly where it should be.

Luckily, they were able to partner with the local senior centre and use one of the green spaces they had, right next to them.

“Use some of the green space to provide a place for our community to be able to utilize and come and go as they please,” added Stevenson. “A beautiful space for people to go and hang out and meet up, because we had nothing like that, within town limits anyway.”

Of course, things like this take money and according to Stevenson “they had none of when they started.”

Therefore, the club held a few fundraisers over the past couple of years, while also receiving some grants from local businesses.

Stevenson mentioned that really sped up the process for this gazebo.

“With those grants, we were able to expedite where we wanted to be by about three to four years, so we were ahead of the game.”

That was especially helpful, as the group was hoping to have the project complete, earlier this summer, however, contractor availability and supply shortages held them back a handful of months.

And while a December opening wasn’t ideal for the group, they’re expecting popularity to rise, come the warmer months.

“We haven’t really seen much of our community utilize the green space yet but we’re hoping come spring that we’ll be able to see some traffic coming in and out of there,” said Stevenson.

The spring is also expected to bring more amenities and revitalization to the green space area, as the group hopes to begin its paver campaign.

This will allow locals to purchase a paver or stone slab and get their name or business engraved in it. People could also purchase one in memory of someone.
