As the Melfort Food Bank hands out their holiday hampers they are extending their thanks to the community and for their continued support.

With pressure due to skyrocketing inflation rates, the people of Melfort have stepped up to ensure no one goes hungry this Christmas.

Secretary Ellen Zuck told northeastNOW that not only are those using the service being fed, but they are also finding extra treats inside of their hampers.

“People get a lot of extra food for Christmas. We’ve been adding lots of goodies. They get pickles and baking kits,” she said.

All of these goodies are possible to the generosity of various businesses and schools in the Northeast.

Melfort and Unit Comprehensive Collegiate (MUCC) recently held a cereal food drive and donated an astounding 306 boxes.

Brunswick School gathered together to give 506 pounds of food and the staff of FWS Group collected 324 pounds of food at their work site.

Thanks to these generous donations, not only are the Christmas hampers filled with additional treats but the following week will also feature additional goods.

Although currently hampers are filled to the brim, Zuck said that the Food Bank typically sees a drop in donations between January and March.

“I think it’s to do with the weather and well and people aren’t thinking so much of charities… when you’re paying up your holiday bills,” Zuck said.

Thanks to food recovery programs in Melfort with Prairie North Co-op and Cindy’s Independent as well as the Buy-Low Foods in Tisdale.

While food donations are at an all-time high, Zuck said monetary donations are at a record low.

“I know that’s just a sign of the times I think that people don’t have the disposable income that they had a year ago,” she said.

Zuck extends her Holiday Wishes as well as gratitude for all of the support the Food Bank has received.
