Prince Albert braces for Rhyno attack

A man who has held numerous world championships is promising to get extreme when he lands in Saskatchewan this week.

Terrance Gerin, better known to wrestling fans as Rhyno, is the special guest for Canadian Wrestling Elite’s (CWE) latest tour through Saskatchewan. The Rumble to Remember Tour includes stops in Saskatoon on Wednesday night at Royal Canadian Legion Branch 63 and Prince Albert on Thursday night at Carlton Park Hall.

Both shows have been advertised to include an over-the-top royal rumble and Gerin confirmed he won’t just be coming to sign autographs.

“You know I told them if I come out then make sure you have a lot of chairs and a lot of tables and garbage cams and stuff like that because I definitely am gonna take things to the extreme, one way or the other,” he said.

Over the course of his career which has spanned over 20 years, Gerin has worked for several promotions including Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW), and World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). He’s currently signed to Impact Wrestling, but his contract allows him to work for smaller promotions such as CWE.

Reflecting on his time with ECW where he had memorable matches with the likes of Rob Van Dam, Sandman, and Tommy Dreamer, Gerin said he has many fond memories, adding he was blessed to have had that opportunity

“One of the great things about technology is you have these streaming systems and you have the [WWE] network where a lot of the younger generation of wrestling fans can see my stuff in ECW,” he said.

For longtime wrestling fans, ECW is often referred to as the attitude era before there was an official WWE Attitude Era. Gerin said he would agree with that.

“They pushed the envelope when a lot of people were playing it safe,” he said.

When ECW shut down in 2001, Rhyno was the final World Heavyweight and World Television Champion. He then joined WWE and one of his first matches was at Wrestlemania 17, where he assisted Canadian wrestlers Edge and Christian win the TLC2 match (tables, ladders, and chairs). Gerin said he was fortunate during his time with WWE to work with some talented tag teams, such as Edge and Christian, the Hardy’s, Dudley Boyz, and the APA.

‘Those guys kind of brought the tag tea division back to where it was when you had the Hart Foundation and the British Bulldogs and the Killer Bees,” he said. “I don’t think it’s had that run, since.”

Also in 2001, Gerin was involved in the popular Invasion angle, which pitted former ECW and WCW wrestlers against the WWE roster. Gerin credited the angle for catapulting his career to the next level, allowing him to work in main events on television and pay-per-view, with the likes of Steve Austin, the Rock and Chris Jericho.

He remained with WWE until 2005, before signing with Total Nonstop Action Wrestling, and soon after won the NWA Heavyweight Championship.

He then returned back to WWE in 2015, and after a stint with NXT, wound up on the SmackDown brand, where he teamed with Heather Slater. Together they became the inaugural Smackdown Tag Team Champions. Gerin acknowledged he never thought he and Slater as a team would last beyond two weeks.

“There was no thought to teaming us up. There was no brainchild. Just the fans loved us both,” he said “The fans are really the reason we went as far as we did.”

Gerin left WWE again in 2019 and returned to TNA, now called Impact Wrestling, where he and Slater are the current tag team champions. Gerin also gets to play a backstage producer role, which he loves.

“It’s one of those things where you a do the player/coach, not a lot of promotions will allow that. I know my in-ring wrestling career is coming to an end. Hopefully, I can get another five years out of it but I still love it as much as I did 20 years ago,” he said.

Tickets for the Prince Albert show remain on sale at Colette Portamedic services, but can also be purchased at the venue.

Doors at Carlton Park Hall will open at 6 p.m. for VIP ticket holders and the show will start at 7 p.m.

Following Thursday night’s show in Prince Albert, CWE will be coming to Yorkton, Regina, and Estevan.
