Raiders hope to turn things around against surging Rebels

Jan 6, 2023 | 12:26 PM

The Prince Albert Raiders (12-21-3-0) look to get back in the win column on Friday night when they host the Central Division’s best Red Deer Rebels (26-6-1-3) for the first time this season.

The Rebels come into the contest riding a four-game win streak while also having won eight of their last nine games. Their latest win came back on Jan. 1 when they defeated Calgary 5-3 on the road. Since the season began, Red Deer has been one of the top teams in the league and in the country appearing in the majority of the CHL’s Top 10 rankings since week one.

PA enters the game on a bit of a downward trend, having lost eight of their last ten games. The latest defeat came just 48 hours ago when the Raiders lost 3-1 to the Hitmen. The Raiders have already played Red Deer a couple of times this season, having no luck in their previous meetings. The Rebels are currently up 2-0 in the season series with 3-0 and 6-1 victories that came back in October and November.

After tonight’s contest, the Raiders will welcome the Brandon Wheat Kings to the Art Hauser Centre on Saturday night in game three of this five-game homestand.

A look at the Eastern Conference standings heading into the game.

Who to Watch

Rookie Ryder Ritchie will look to extend his point streak to seven games after finding the back of the net in his last game. With that point on Wednesday, the 16-year-old forward tied Landon Kosior for the longest point streak of the season on the Raiders at six games. The Calgary product has netted eight points since the streak started against the Tigers on Dec. 14.

Assistant captain Sloan Stanick currently leads the team in points with 33 (12G, 21A) on the year and is nearing the century mark for career points. The pride of Rapid City, MB has 92 points (37G, 55A) in his career and will appear in his 175th WHL game tonight. So far this season against the Rebels, Stanick has one assist in two games.

Veteran Keaton Sorensen will look to make career history tonight as he shoots for a new career high in points, and is hoping to do it against his former team. The Red Deer product has 28 points (14G, 14A) entering tonight and is the only Raider to find the back of the net against the Rebels this year.
