Battlefords local, Daivan Scherman is B.C. bound for the next chapter in her volleyball journey.

Scherman, who is currently in her senior year at North Battleford Comprehensive High School has announced her commitment to the College of the Rockies Avalanche, in Cranbrook, BC.

She said she’s looking forward to the chance to take her game to the post-secondary level next fall.

“I’m really excited and really thankful to have this opportunity,” Scherman said with an audible smile. “I’m thankful for all the coaches I’ve had growing up in North Battleford that shared their experiences, their talent, and knowledge throughout the years, and to have this opportunity is just amazing.”

Scherman said her decision to commit to the Avalanche program became an easy one after her experience visiting the campus to see the school and meet the team.

“One of the main things was the welcoming atmosphere when I went to visit,” she said. “I instantly felt like I was already part of the team, the girls were so nice and so positive, and the coach really welcomed me. In the practices I got a lot of feedback, and I can really see myself developing my game there.”

For those who know her, it is likely no surprise to hear the positive team atmosphere played a large part in the decision. After all, for the NBCHS Vikings’ starting middle, the team-first aspect of the sport is what initially drew her to the game of volleyball in her youth, growing up as a multi-sport athlete.

“I started playing volleyball in Grade 6 and I always really loved the game because of the team aspect of it,” she said. “You need all your teammates on the court, and I really liked that.”

Born and raised on her family’s farm just outside of Battleford, Scherman played an instrumental role in the Vikings’ success throughout her high school career, highlighted by a 5A provincials bronze medal her Grade 11 year, and a regionals bronze this season, while serving as a co-captain with the team.

Head coach with the Vikings’ senior girls, Wendy Verity said she’s happy to see Scherman’s dedication to the game pay off.

“Daivan works really hard so this is something she earned, and it’s really exciting to see where she’ll go in volleyball,” Verity said. “She’s a great all-around athlete and that’s a foundation you need at the college level, and she’s very competitive so I’m excited to see her continue to the next level.”
