Dreams have become reality for three young athletes from the tri-communities who currently play for the town’s Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) team.

Forwards Jacob Cossette, 18, of Air Ronge and Cobe Delaney, 19, of La Ronge, as well as defenceman Parker Layton, 19, of La Ronge, are all current players with the Ice Wolves. Delaney and Layton have been on the team since the start of the 2021-22 season, while Cossette was acquired in a trade just last month.

“It’s great for them to play in their hometown,” head coach Kevin Kaminski said.

“I know growing up in a small town myself, as a 14-year-old playing a couple of games with the senior team. I know it is only seniors, but it was a thrill. It was kind of what you wanted to do, and to play in front of your hometown and your family, your buddies and friends and the community, I don’t think there is anything better.”

While all three played minor hockey together, Delaney and Layton managed to be on the same teams throughout their entire careers. In recent years, they both played with the Beardy’s Blackhawks midget AAA team, as well as the Warman Wildcats before joining the Ice Wolves in 2021.

Cossette spent time with the AAA Prince Albert Mintos where he led the league in scoring during the 2021-22 season and was named most valuable player. He most recently played with Spruce Grove Saints of the Alberta Junior Hockey League, where he earned 11 points in 22 games this season.

So far this season, Delaney has played 18 games and earned seven points with the Ice Wolves, while Layton has 34 games and 17 points and Cossette has eight games and five points.

Cosette called joining the Ice Wolves a very proud moment for himself.

“I know a lot of people in the town and it is really nice to see familiar faces in the crowd,” he said. “I can look into the crowd and I basically know every person in the rink. It is exciting and obviously the coaches are good. When I was a kid I dreamed of playing here and now it is a reality.”

Delaney and Layton also spoke about the joy they have representing the Ice Wolves.

“I think just soaking in Killer and [Kyle] Schneider here,” Delaney said about a highlight of being on the team. “They are great coaches. They help out a lot and just their play style.”

Layton mentioned growing up in minor hockey he looked up to players on the team and now he wants to fill that role.

“It’s a dream come true,” he said. “Growing up here you see the guys who played before I have and you just want to model your game after them and you look up to them as little kids. I try to be a role model for the younger generation because these guys, when I was that age, were definitely my role models.”

The Ice Wolves are currently third overall in the SJHL with 45 points in 36 games. The team has an upcoming string of six home games beginning Wednesday against the Nipawin Hawks.
