The Battlefords North Stars solidified their blue line for the stretch run of the SJHL season, making just a single move at ahead of the Canadian Junior Hockey League Trade Deadline, Tuesday.

The team announced its lone move of the day at about 4 p.m. local time, bolstering the backend by acquiring 19-year-old defenceman Alex Izyk from the Calgary Canucks of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) in exchange for a PDF.

Head coach, Brayden Klimosko said it was important to solidify the team’s defense with another strong body back there for the rigors of the stretch drive, with playoffs approaching.

“We were looking for another defenseman as you never can have enough depth at defense, and if someone were to go down, we’ve got some bodies back there now that can fill some major roles for us,” Klimosko said. “Izyk is a big, solid defenseman who can move pucks for us.”

Izyk joins the Battlefords after registering three assists in 23 games with the Calgary Canucks this season. In 79 career AJHL games, split between the Canucks and Fort McMurray Oil Barons, the Blackie, AB., product had two goals and nine points.

Izyk is likely to make his North Stars debut when the team set out this weekend on their three-game southern road swing with stops in Wilcox (Notre Dame), Weyburn, and Estevan.

The NAPA Auto Parts North Stars Hockey Broadcast will begin a bit later than usual for the first game Thursday against the Hounds, with the Ultra Print Pregame Show at 7:30 p.m. and puck drop to follow at 8 p.m. on 1050 CJNB.
