Project aimed at capturing emissions from oil wells launches near North Battleford

A new project aimed at turning emissions into clean natural gas is up and running in Saskatchewan.

Angkor Resources Corp officially activated its Solution Gas/Carbon Capture Project in Evesham, a hamlet around 130 km southwest of North Battleford, last week after nine months of work to get it operational.

Delayne Weeks, CEO of Angkor Resources, told battlefordsNOW their site is aimed at helping smaller oil wells that don’t have access to gas plants.

“(The site) has no choice but to either flare the gas or vent it to the atmosphere,” she said. “Our solution would be to capture that, put it in a pipeline, bring it in, clean it up, and essentially process it for clean natural gas which we use for heating.”

This specific project will collect various gases from 24 oil wells across 1,280 acres of farmland through underground pipelines. The gases are than processed into a clean, natural gas, and eventually transported to TransGas, which collects gas from wells sites, and regulated by the province of Saskatchewan.

Weeks added this process is not only environmentally friendly but also has a positive economic impact.

“We need it as energy in our homes and in our businesses and whatnot on a year-round business.”

She explained the amount of natural gas being converted from these sites won’t be at the same level as major oil and gas sites in Alberta and Saskatchewan. However, she believes it will still be significant.

“When you add a whole lot of producing units, the consolidation of that is substantial.”

Over the next few weeks, the project is expected to capture around 500,000 cubic feet of gas per day. This is expected to increase as operations ramp up and more oil wells are connected.
