A 34 year old man is dead in what police are calling a homicide early Wednesday in the northern community of Pelican Narrows.

Police say the man is Dalton Linklater of Pelican Narrows.

RCMP noted they were called to a home on Ballantyne Street at 2:25 Wednesday morning. They found Linklater suffering from a life threatening injury.

Police say he was rushed to a local hospital, but was declared dead soon afterwards. Victims services have been called in to help the community, and police say the investigation continues.

“Residents can expect to see an increased police presence for an undetermined amount of time as police investigate the incident,” an RCMP news release states.

The community is in a state of emergency, according to a Facebook post from the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation (PBCN), and the suspects are believed to be still at large.

“I heard they’re still on the run,” said one resident who did not want to be named. “We’re worried – we’re sitting here worried, don’t let anybody in….we look out the window if anybody knocks on the door.”

Another resident told northeastNOW police remained at the scene on Ballantyne Street for many hours.

“Outside, just parking…keeping an eye on the scene,” said the person, who also did not want to be named. “A whole bunch of vehicles, the cop vehicles.”

The PBCN is asking people to take precautions.

“Effective immediately the community of Pelican Narrows will be on a curfew from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. Members are notified that check stops will be increased, including patrolling all entries and the community. We encourage parents to communicate with their youth and young adults to refrain from engaging in any social activity,” said the post.

The post also asks people to be on the alert, keep doors locked, and report any suspicious activity they see.

“Our condolences to the victim’s family and community,” the post added.

Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes has taken charge of the investigation.

The Saskatchewan Coroner’s Service also attended and have ordered an autopsy.
