Stars shoot for 17th straight, weekend sweep in Estevan

Jan 14, 2023 | 3:00 PM

The Battlefords North Stars return to play Saturday night in Estevan, as the team wrap their weekend road swing through southern Saskatchewan, in search of a three-day sweep.

The North Stars (33-0-2-1) sit atop the league standings, having played some of their best hockey of late on the trip. Following a 9-6 victory at Notre Dame Thursday, the team continued their roll Friday in Weyburn, beating the Wings 6-1 to set a new regular season franchise record for consecutive wins with 17 straight.

Estevan will likely prove the toughest challenge yet of the trip, as the Bruins (22-16-1-1) sit atop the Viterra Division and third overall in the league standings. The Bruins have won six of their last 10 and two straight, heading into Saturday night’s contest.

Also on their third game in three nights, Estevan enter play coming off back-to-back 5-3 wins over Yorkton Thursday and Notre Dame Friday.

There will be no shortage of firepower on display Saturday night, with four of the league’s top-six scorers featured in the showdown, as well as the top two in defenseman scoring.

Between the pipes, the North Stars will hand the reigns to goaltender, Justen Maric to make his second start of the New Year. In nine games this season, Maric is 9-0 with a 2.44 goals against average and .934 save percentage.

At the other end, Estevan could see a return of starter Cam Hrdlicka, after returning to the lineup from injury last night to back-up. In 32 games this year, Hrdlicka is 18-10-0-1 with a 2.68 goals against average and .916 save percentage.

Saturday’s game will be available on 1050 CJNB, with a slightly earlier start than usual. The Ultra Print Pregame Show will begin at 6:30 p.m. with puck drop at 7 p.m.
