Meadow Lake city focuses on electric scooter and bike safety

The City of Meadow Lake hopes its updated traffic bylaw will make the roads safer for drivers and pedestrians alike.

A third reading was carried and passed at the recent council meeting that will also affect the use of electric scooters and electric bikes.

“The traffic bylaw amendment was primarily focused on e-scooter and e-bike usage for the upcoming year,” Mayor Merlin Seymour said. “We just want to make sure that everyone is safe out there.”

In particular, the city hopes to ensure people are wearing their helmets when using electric scooters and electric bikes.

“They [the devices] do move along a little bit quicker than normal pedal-bikes,” Seymour said. “So, we just want to make sure that if there is something that comes up, if there is an accident, that there will be safety measures that will be in place through our bylaw — specifically [requiring] helmets.”

While he noticed a few e-scooters and e-bikes being used in the area last year, Seymour expects to see more on the roads this coming spring and summer as interest picks up.

He said since e-scooters and e-bikes are newer modes of transportation, the city wants to make sure everyone is up to speed with the rules.

“[They] are getting to be more prevalent within the community,” Seymour said. “There’s not a hundred of them, by any means, but there are some people out there [using them]. So we just want to be proactive, to make sure people are taking steps to be safe when they are out on the e-scooters or e-bikes.”

He also reminds people these devices should be used on the roads, not the sidewalks. They are also allowed on the walking paths, provided people abide by the rules and yield to pedestrians.

Also included in the city’s updated traffic bylaw, Meadow Lake drivers are reminded to take note of the latest fines for parking offences for motor vehicles.

People are advised to check with the City of Meadow Lake’s website and Facebook Page to stay up to date on all its bylaws. They can also register for the city’s Voyent Alert messaging system to receive notifications on city news and other activities.
