PRINCE ALBERT, SK – The Winnipeg ICE handed the Raiders a beating on Wednesday night, steamrolling Prince Albert 8-1 at the Art Hauser Centre.

The loss comes four days after PA edged the Edmonton Oil Kings 4-3 in overtime.

The Raiders kept it close in the first and managed to get within one in the second but everything came crashing down almost immediately after. Raiders head coach Jeff Truitt told paNOW what the downfall was for PA in the second period.

“We took some penalties and they capitalized on them,” he said. “They have a dynamic powerplay and skill. We knew there was going to be penalties but you try to limit them as best you can and once they got that third (goal), the energy went down a bit. You wanna fight back and have positive shifts and whatnot, but we just didn’t have enough of them tonight.”

Zach Benson and Connor McClennon both led the ICE in points, scoring once and adding three assists. Carson Lambos also had a multi point performance in the game, potting two goals while Carson Latimer, Conor Geekie, Ty Nash, and Easton Armstrong also lit the lamp. Additionally, Winnipeg had seven different assist getters in the contest.

Hayden Pakkala was the lone goal scorer for the Raiders, with Easton Kovacs and Justice Christensen both collecting assists on the play.

Tikhon Chaika and Max Hildebrand each combined for 31 saves on the night where the Raiders now fall to 15-24-3-0 on the campaign.

Daniel Hauser was near perfect for the ICE making 15 saves for the win and to help Winnipeg improve to 31-5-1-0 on the year.

COMPLETE BOX SCORE

The score was tied at the start of the first period and by the end, Winnipeg had a two-goal lead. Zero’s stayed on the scoreboard until the dying minutes of the period when McClennon gave the ICE the lead with 2:28 remaining, and then with 15 seconds to go Lambos doubled the Winnipeg lead heading into the second.

The Raiders came out of the box fast in middle frame, scoring just 40 seconds in. A Kovacs shot from the point was blocked in front, but Pakkala was there to put home the loose puck to shave the lead down to one.

Winnipeg quickly restored their two-goal-advantage just over 90 seconds later with Benson scoring his 24th of the year. The ICE then scored back-to-back powerplay goals with markers from Geekie and former Raider Latimer towards the end of the frame where the ICE held a 5-1 lead going into period three.

The ICE didn’t let off the gas to start the third, scoring three times within the first five minute of the period. Lambos netted his second of night while Nash and Armstrong got in on the scoring parade to make it a seven-goal lead. After Lambos’ marker early in the frame, Chaika was pulled from the game and Hildebrand was in net for the remainder.

Prince Albert now gets a days rest before heading south to Saskatoon to kick off a home-and-home series against the Blades on Friday night. Puck drop is at 7 p.m.
